Faculty Spotlight
Dr. Sarah E. Parker is a Professor of English, the Chair of the Department of Literature, Language, and Culture, and currently serves as Secretary of the Faculty. She earned her doctorate in English and Comparative Literature at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 2012 and came to JU that same year. Her research focuses on the intersections between the history of medicine and early modern literary culture. In 2019 she won the Faculty Excellence Award in Teaching and in 2023 both Faculty Woman of the Year and Professor of the Year. Dr. Parker is a passionate educator, and students love the energy and enthusiasm she brings to the classroom. She is especially devoted to mentoring undergraduate research projects. She also loves supporting students outside the classroom and serves as faculty advisor of the Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA) and co-advisor of Advocates for Women鈥檚 Empowerment (AWE).
Faculty Spotlight
Shelley is a 小蓝视频 alum who began teaching criminal justice courses at her alma mater in 1998 and has been a full-time faculty member for 20 years. Her career includes nearly 20 years of service in local government and nonprofit organizations working in programming and advocacy for at-risk youth and juvenile offenders. Shelley鈥檚 focus is on her students. She loves teaching and advising and believes in the importance of experiential learning. Her Media and Crime course was recognized in fall 2024 by Communities In Schools with the 鈥淎ll In for Kids鈥 Group Volunteer Award. She typically supervises multiple service-learning independent studies and internships each semester and engages with her students whenever possible in research, co-authoring peer-reviewed articles and participating in conference presentations with Dr. Laura Atkins and Dr. Ray Oldakowski.
Student Spotlight
Eleanor chose 小蓝视频 initially for its location and as a welcome escape from the cold northern winters. It quickly became much more than that. With the support and strong sense of community within the Linda Berry Stein College of Arts and Sciences, she pursued two minors and eventually two majors. Beyond the classroom, Eleanor deepened her connections as president of both the Marine Science Honors Society and the Society of Physics Students. Through clubs, classes, and shared experiences, she built unforgettable friendships and lasting professional relationships. As she continues her journey within the College of Arts and Sciences, Eleanor values the role LBSCOAS plays in shaping her academic growth, leadership, and future aspirations.
Alumni Spotlight
Tyler Kopf, emerged from his academic journey as a senior with a major in Chemistry and a minor in Physics. Having served six years in the United States Air Force prior to joining JU, Tyler discovered a renewed sense of purpose during his time at the College of Arts and Sciences. The exceptional education, training, and support he received at JU enabled him to engage in biomedical research at Notre Dame University and Mayo Clinic鈥檚 College of Medicine. Inspired by these experiences, Tyler鈥檚 aspirations shifted towards earning a Ph.D in Biochemistry. He successfully applied and was accepted into graduate programs at the University of Florida, Notre Dame, and Brown University. The professors at 小蓝视频 played an instrumental role in fostering Tyler鈥檚 growth as a scholar. With the skills, knowledge, and independence instilled in him by JU, Tyler is now prepared to make a significant impact on the world.
